FCN sign Josip Drmic

1. FC Nürnberg have signed Switzerland forward Josip Drmic from FC Zurich.

FCN have made another step in the strengthening of their attack. Josip Drmic has signed a four-year contract with Nürnberg, moving to the Valznerweiher Sportpark from Swiss club FC Zurich. The Switzerland international completed his medical in Nuremberg on Friday and will wear the number 18 at FCN.

“We always said that, if there saw a chance to, we would strengthen the team in attack,” explained FCN chairman Martin Bader. There remain a few formalities to work out with FC Zurich but a verbal agreement has been reached by all parties. “We were looking to sign a very talented player and that is what we’ve done with Josip.”

Success in Switzerland

FCN manager Michael Wiesinger: “It’s a good thing for the management of course when there’s a certain amount of competition in your team.” Several European clubs showed interest in the Swiss attacker “which makes us all the more pleased that Josip decided to join 1. FC Nürnberg.

Josip Drmic was one of the top performers in the Swiss league last season. The 6’0’’ striker scored 13 times in 31 league games and was the third-best goalscorer, as well as providing six assists. In a total of 39 competitive matches last season, he scored 19 goals.

International appearances

“The club showed a great deal of interest in me and gave me good reason to come here in our conversations,” said Josip Drmic. “There are a lot of Switzerland internationals in the Bundesliga. Over the past years, FCN have gisven young players the opportunity to develop to a top level. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Drmic has worked his way into Ottmar Hitzfeld’s Switzerland team with his good performances and celebrated his senior debut in September 2012. He had already represented his nation at the London Olympics in 2012, as well as in the team’s youth setups.

Josip Drmic is 1. FC Nürnberg’s sixth summer signing following Emanuel Pogatetz, Daniel Ginczek, Martin Angha, Mariusz Stepinski and Nick Weber.
