Didavi elected Player of the Season
The 1. FC Nürnberg fans have chosen attacking midfielder Daniel Didavi as their player of the season for 2011/12. Defender Dominic Maroh was just behind in second place, with youngster Julian Wießmeier in third.
Over 28,000 fans voted in the poll, which gave Didavi a narrow victory. ‘Dida’ as he is affectionately known around the club, was understandably delighted with the recognition. “It’s amazing, I never would have expected it”, said the 22-year-old enthusiastically. “I’m extremely proud to have won this award and I’d like to say a huge thank-you to the fans.” It should provide Didavi with a small consolation as he prepares to undergo a knee operation.
This year’s poll attracted almost 7,000 more voters than last season, effectively creating a two-horse race for the title between Dida and Maroh, which the former won with a 28% share of the voter. Thanks to everyone who got in touch to register their choices!
Outstanding second half to the season
What probably swung things in Didavi’s favour was his exceptional form in the second half of the campaign. After the unfortunate injury suffered by Alexander Esswein, Dida took the goalscoring burden on himself and rattled in nine goals in his final ten games. He made club history by scoring in five consecutive league games, and additionally managed to provide three assists for his teammates, as 1. FCN soared clear of the relegation zone to finish in a modest 10th place in the table.
