Club news English September 2009

In a month that gave Der Club there first league win of the season, it was not all plain sailing as 1.FCN continued to try to find their feet in the Bundesliga. Jon Goulding reports on the action during September.

Nikl returns to Nuremberg

With the first weekend of September seeing a pause in the Bundesliga action to make way for international games, Bohemians Prague visited Valznerweiher  a friendly match.

Among their ranks was former FCN defender Marek Nikl who played in Nuremberg for nine years, finishing his career at Der Club with a place in the starting line-up for the 2007 DFB Cup Final.

Making his debut for FCN was new signing Maxim Choupo-Moting, on loan from Hamburg. In front of 675 spectators braving the rain, the 20-year-old striker put in a good performance.

Despite the game being a friendly fixture, the ever-competitive club captain, Andreas Wolf, was dismissed from the pitch in the 43rd minute for unsportsmanlike conduct and was subsequently suspended for two matches (plus three friendlies).

The guests managed to hold Der Club in the first half but after the break, goals from Albert Bunjaku (59), Marek Mintal (63) and Christian Eigler (89) saw the hosts secure a 3-0 victory.

Former club favourite Nikl, still a good friend of Mintal and follower of the fortunes of 1.FCN, told reporters, “We presented ourselves well in the first half but after the break the club was better.”

First league win – 3 points against Moenchengladbach

Saturday 12th September and a full easyCredit Stadium cheering Der Club on towards victory – a daunting sight and sound for any visiting team, and a sight and sound too much for Borussia VfL 1900 Moenchengladbach.

And ironically it was their former player, midfielder Peer Kluge, who secured the points for Nuremberg with a well-taken goal in just the sixth minute. Eigler ‘s good ball from the left found Kluge who was able  to react quicker than the defender and sank the ball into the net.

After the game Kluge reflected, “This was not our best game, but a successful one.” He was right. Although the vital three points were secured so early on in the game, the guests battled to change this outcome. However, despite chances for both sides, it was the solitary goal which decided the destiny of the points.

Goalkeeper Raphael Schaefer afterwards said, "We have really struggled [so far]. The three points was very important… It’s nice that we played without conceding – it is what I am paid for. Our boys have done a super job."

A shame – defeat in the Bavarian derby

It is never easy to visit the Allianz Arena, home of the rich Bayen Munich and their team of internationals assembled at huge expense, and this game at the home of Riibery, Robben and co. would be no different.

Before the kick-off, football and regional rivalries were put aside as a minutes silence was held in respect of murder victim Dominik Brunner. The two teams played the game wearing black armbands.

The minute of silence over, and the 10,000 Clubberer who had travelled from Franconia erupted into a cacophony of club chants to spur on their team.

A nervous start in front of the 69,000 fans saw Raphael Schaefer have to parry opportunities in the eighth and sixteenth minutes. As for Der Club, the best chance fell to Marcel Risse who, receiving a good pass from Christian Eigler, had his shot saved by Bayern ‘keeper Butt.

But Munich kept pushing forward and Gomez, Schweinsteiger and Robben all went close, while Schaefer made good saves to keep the scores level at half-time.

However, 10 minutes after the restart, Olic put the hosts ahead. However, this lead was not long-lived as Maxim Choupo-Moting, in just his second game for 1.FCN, scored his first Bundesliga goal.

Despite great joy from the away supporters, the celebrations did not last too long. With just eight minutes remaining, van Buyten restored the lead for the hosts and Nuremberg left Munich with a 2-1 defeat.

Cup exit

Just three days after defeat in Munich, Hoffenheim were the guests in Nuremberg for the second round of the DFB Cup.

Despite creating chances, FCN were unable to find the net and a generally poor performance saw the hosts concede to a Nillson goal in the 35th minute.

Schaefer was able to save everything else sent his way by Hoffenheim in what was an excellent performance from the Nuremberg goalkeeper, but at the other end of the pitch, the equalizing goal would not come, and the 2007 Cup Winners were out of the competition.

Home defeat to Bochum

Just as Peer Kluge had secured the points in the opening minutes of the game against Moenchengladbach, visitors Bochum took victory courtesy of a seventh minute Klimovic goal as the easyCredit stadium hosted its first Friday evening game of the season.

While Der Club created a few chances, they made little impression and Bochum were able to hold on to their lead.

Raphael Schafer, in his post-match comments to the press, summarized the game: "At the very beginning we have conceded a stupid goal, and then simply found no remedy against Bochum. We have over-complicated our play. The team was confused, the ideas have been missing… the dissatisfaction of the fans is entitled. You have lost patience with us, we cannot complain about that. We now have to keep calm, the season is not over yet.”

Better news for 1.FCN II

Five games for the second team in the month of September brought with them 11 points, as 1.FCN II went through the month undefeated. Draws against SSV Ulm 1846 and SG Sonnenhof Grossaspach at the beginning of the month were followed by victories over Fuerth II (1-4), Pullendorf (1-0) and Karlsruher II (0-2).
