News from Der Club over the past month

The start of the new season brings new challenges for 1.FCN both on and off the field. A first round cup victory sets up a Bavarian 'derby' against Bayern Munich while mixed 2.Bundesliga results point the way to the hard work ahead. The captain suffers a long term injury, a key player exits the club and the coach resigns after just two games.

First round victory in the cup

The first game of the season for 1.FC Nürnberg took place on Sunday 10th August with an away tie against Rot-Weiss Ahlen in the DFB Pokal. The 2007 Pokal winners came up against a concrete Ahlen defence and chances were few and far between in the first half.  Ahlen were more attacking in the second period though neither team could break the deadlock. The hosts came closest when Grosskreutz headed against the crossbar. Extra time saw 1.FCN substitute Daniel Gygax lash a shot against the Ahlen bar but after 120 minutes there was still no score. The penalty shootout saw a dream start for Der Club as Raphael Schäfer saved the first Ahlen penalty. The Nuremberg players held their nerve to score with their first four attempts and Schäfer was the hero as he saved the final Ahlen effort to give 1.FCN a 4:3 penalty victory.

The draw for the second round of the competition pairs Der Club with Bayern Munich. The game will be played in the Allianz Arena at 20:30 on Wednesday 24th September.

New striker signs

In a bid to strengthen the attack at Der Club, Isaac Boakye was signed from Wolfsburg for an undisclosed fee in the middle of the month. With 18 caps for Ghana, the 26 year old forward came with a record of 29 goals in 100 league matches in German football and signed a contract until the end of the 2009-10 season.

League season off to a winning start

Boakye made a goal scoring debut in the first game of the 2.Bundesliga season on Sunday 17th August. Der Club beat FC Augsburg 2:1 in front of 39,700 spectators in the Easy Credit Stadium. A Javier Pinola penalty secured the three points.

The first goal came in the 22nd minute after a collision between Augsburg goalkeeper Neuhaus and defender Hertzsch. The ball fell to Mario Breska who unselfishly passed to Boakye for a straightforward finish. Both Augsburg players were carried from the pitch by stretcher and played no further part in the game.

"Pino" scores

To their credit, Augsburg fought hard and it was only after a 52nd minute penalty awarded for a Khizaneishvili pull on Andy Wolf that Nuremberg looked to be gaining control. Pinola fired the penalty straight into the middle of the goal. However, the two goal advantage was short-lived with Torghelle scoring for the visitors just two minutes later and 1.FCN were made to sweat it out until the final whistle as both teams created useful openings.

Coach Thomas von Heesen admitted that Augsburg had made the game difficult for his team and President Michael Roth agreed saying that the 2.Bundesliga will not be easy.

Wolf faces long spell on the sidelines

Meanwhile, goal scoring debutant Boakye commented on the sensational atmosphere in the stadium and was clearly pleased with his first game for Der Club.

The victory over Augsburg was somewhat soured when centre half Andy Wolf was carried from the pitch in the 72nd minute having torn knee ligaments. The team captain now looks certain to have a lengthy spell on the sidelines. He will be missed immensely by the team and everyone at 1.FCN wishes him a full and speedy recovery.

Tribute to the greatest

Over the past year the fans of Der Club have raised money for a statue to celebrate Max Morlock, the player most Clubberer and experts believe to be the greatest to ever wear a 1.FCN shirt. Morlock scored some 700 goals in around 900 games for Nuremberg and on 23rd August the tribute was unveiled. The piece, sculpted by Edgar Hahn Herschaid, shows the player holding aloft the Meisterschale (the championship shield) in 1961.

Club Vice-President Siegfried Schneider hailed the statue, "A great piece of Nuremberg’s football tradition for the younger generation." The tribute to Morlock is situated behind the Nordkurve.

First away game ends in defeat

The Fritz Walter Stadium in Kaiserslautern was the Monday (25th August) setting for Nuremberg's first away game of the season. 34,677 witnessed the home side dominate the first half of the game scoring twice through Florian Dick (23rd minute) and Erik Jendrisek (36th minute).

Immediately after the break Isaac Boakye scored his second of the season when he volleyed home a Robert Vittek cross to reduce the deficit to 2-1 (47th minute). Substitute Marek Mintal came close in the final minutes but the three points belonged to Kaiserslautern.

FCK coach Milan Sasic felt the first half passion and commitment of his team prevented Nuremberg from showing their strength.

Thomas von Heesen stated that, "Over the first half I was not disappointed but infuriated." He went on to add that Der Club missed the injured Andreas Wolf and that the two goals came from unnecessary loss of the ball. "All in all the victory for Kaiserslautern was not undeserved," he said.

Resignation

Club coach Thomas von Heesen resigned from his role on Thursday 28th August. He told reporters that, "Due to the current situation, which has gained momentum in a way I would never have thought possible, I have decided to relinquish my office here. I find it incomprehensible that a coach's position can be so comprehensively cast into doubt just two games into the season - particularly in the knowledge a reconstructed, rejuvenated team needs time to develop." Adding that he wished the players all the best and that he hoped the team could achieve the success everyone hoped for, von Heesen's departure comes a little over six months after he took over from Hans Meyer.

Vittek departs for France

After five years in Nuremberg, striket Robert Vittek completed a transfer to OSC Lille. With 36 goals in 124 league games for Der Club, 26 year old Vittek had his best spell in the second half of the 2005-06 season with 16 goals in 17 games.

The club thanks Robert for the great years and wishes him well in the French league.

Draw against Aachen

1.FCN caretaker coach Micheal Oenning brought Matthew Spiranovic, Marek Mintal and Angelos Charisteas into the team for the home game against Aachen on the last day of the month.

30,113 spectators saw Der Club concede two goals without reply in the first half. However, in the second half, Christian Eigler pulled one back with a shot from the edge of the penalty area in the 49th minute and Daniel Gygax levelled matters following confusion in the Aachen defence in the 68th. Nuremberg nearly sealed a victory when a Mintal cross found Charisteas who was unlucky to see his header rebound from the post.

Players Eigler, Schäfer and Goncalves were all of the opinion that Der Club should have taken three points but all involved were happy with a positive performance. Manager Martin Bader said that the players provided everything the fans wanted to see. "With their performance the players have sent out a clear signal," he added.

Other news from August

The month saw the launch of ClubTV, the 1.FC Nürnberg channel availble via the internet. For a price of just 35.99 Euros one can watch features, interviews and 1.FCN highlights. A few minutes after each game has finished, subscribers to ClubTV can watch the game in full.

1.FC Nürnberg II, the club's second team, made a good start to their Regionlliga Süd season with three wins from three games, scoring ten and conceding just one in the process.

With the first weekend of September clear of league fixtures because of international matches, Der Club have arranged a friendly against Offenbach Kickers for Friday 5th September.
